The Island:

The Island is Special

The island giveth, the island taketh away

Seems like a no brainer, but I'm guessing that Locke is losing use of his legs because, by trying to find the downed plane, he is indirectly trying to get off the island? That's the same reason the monster shows up, kind of an intervention because the prodigal student is trying to leave the island?

Spoilerish?? I think not. Just some good spectulation. How about Locke moves away from the magnetic part of the Island (if the island has anything to do with magnetism). Ido not know. Just when you thing you may have something figured out, the writers throw a wrench in the cog.

I'm assuming you all just saw the preview for next week.

I agree, it looks like Lockes/ Boones interest in the plane is the cause of the re-paralysis, I just can't beleive he told Boone the island gave him something, now its trying to take it away."

and I guess boone is now also back up for grabs in the dying aspect.

I thought because they hadn't found the plane yet he was safe. Guess not.
Can anyone confirm the death episode yet ?

Do no harm is my guess.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
it's all cool.

I paused posting it here for that reason, but cmon folks, we saw the damn preview.
for those that didn't.

it showed locke and boone out and about, locke sees a plane smoking and crashing somewhere, they go to find it.
Locke stumbles and boone tries to help,, Locke then say..the island gave something to me, now its trying to take it away..
in a what have i done to deserve this way...IMO

he becomes the fraile and wimpy, pre-crash locke.

boone goes into the cockpit, I did not see a dead person in there either.. boones uses the CB and voila !
Someones there !!! they say hello ? & IMO, It sounded like an english voice.

theres more..someone else fill in, I'd like to recap this as well.

One more question. Why did the plane crash here. Seems like a rather large coincidence that the plane just happened to go down on crap-hole island. It could be that the pilot was flying over because he heard the distress call, or maybe he was just flying over on accident, but either way I would guess the power of the island actually caused the plane to poop out & crash.

Wow,
I missed the preview. Thanks Yung for the blow by blow account.

It seems pretty firm then - that the island literally gave Locke his legs back AND his strong personality. And the island does not want them going anywhere. Is that why Lennie is a loon? He didn't get sucked in, so instead he got punished with madness.

Now the part about Locke's personality reverting to wimpness is disapointing. "Hell, I'm an optimist" and I was in the camp that thought Locke was never a wuss in any way. Now, I'll have to re-evalutate it.

Re: The island giveth, the island taketh away

I'm with you shtbl. I felt that he was a confident person even if he let idiots like his boss put him down. Some people who are very confident aren't bothered by someone trying to put them down. After the preview I'm questioning the confident Locke and seeing him more as a lonely pathetic person(in his own opinion) I still think that Sayid's being in the Rep. Guard will be a connection to the hatch and maybe getting it open though. I think he may be looking for Locke after his mysterious vanishing next week. Maybe they weren't in Iraq together after all. However, one thing that also caught my attention was when Sayid was working on the compass and Locke walked up on him, Sayid said, " I didn't hear you." It was like he should have heard someone because with his training that shouldn't happen. That still makes me think that Locke has some training if he could sneak up on Sayid.

What do you think?

sawyerhasbestlines, this response may belong in another thread, but the idea that you brought up about Lennie is big. He mentioned that Hurley had "opened the Box!" What must he have done to get that sick? I know he wasn't actually on the island, just at a listening post, but he must've experienced the numbers, also.

Your statement sounds as if you think that the Republican Guard was a special forces unit like the US Rangers or SEALs. It wasn't; they were considered elite because they got better equipment, & pay. Undoubtedly they received better training than the regular Iraqi army, but then the regular army was staffed with draftees & those whose loyalties to Hussein was questionable, so their training was probably substandard.

Republican Guard

It was my understanding that the Rep. Guard were Saddam's personal guard. I know that Sayid is from Tikrit, which is where Saddam is from. My line of thought was that the personal guard of Saddam would have knowledge of the miles of underground tunnels Saddam had in Iraq. No? Maybe I'm wrong.

Re: Republican Guard

The Republican Guard was primarily an internal security force. When the Iraqi army was in combat the vaunted Republican Guard deployed behind the front line troops (so those troops couldn't run away). As amply demonstrated in all three of Iraq's major wars, they were basically inept as combat troops.

That's true, but Sayid definately has some survival skills. He learned them somewhere.

And where is Locke when Boone makes the distress call? Did Boone just leave him on the ground whimpering?

Re: Republican Guard

I still ponder how, in this day of plane terrorism, did Sayid, a known Iraqi saddam loyalist get on board flight 815.
Is there not some sort of filter regarding Hussein related people... thanks to Fush (thats f_ck bush all in one neat little name) ?

how did sayid get on the damn plane ?

not that all iraqi's are terrorists...

his boarding may be interesting to see.

Re: The island giveth, the island taketh away

seems that everyone is assuming that the plane is from off the island. while this is more likely, it is also plausible(especially given the age of the plane) that it might have taken off from the island. this assumes that it is an older plane (it appears to be) that crashed (semi-gently) or landed (roughly) on the island years ago. maybe others on the island were able to fix up the plane to use to escape, just as the 815 survivors are trying to build a raft to escape.

As for locke, he is not a good guy, despite appearances. when serving an amoral or immoral master, you may receive some benefits, but those benefits will likely be taken away, especially if you go against the master.

Re: The island giveth, the island taketh away

I've given up trying to avoid next weeks previews when their shown. I've tried turning my head, but I'm usually to late, and end up seeing everything. So, I say, if it's shown as a preview, it shouldn't be considered a spoiler. And, you guys know how I hate spoilers.

Also, everyone in this thread has forgotten the excruciating headaches Sawyer is going to encounter. I wonder what's that all about!

I'm sure we all have an idea what Locke gave the island for the return of his mobility, but for the life of me I can't imagine Sawyer giving up anything?

Any thoughts?
