Come unto these yellow sands,
And then take hands:
Courtsied when you have, and kiss’d
The wild waves whist.
The Tempest. Act i. Sc. 2
I know this is remedial, but it's best to question everything.
Has any of the characters either said or confirmed that they are in fact
on an island?

I've thought the same thing from the beginning! They haven't actually
been AROUND the island, so how do they know it's not a peninsula or something
else. How do they know it's an island?
Very good point. I think it was brought up in the beginning, but I'm glad
it's been brought up again.

The writers have explicity said "The island has been there for thousands
and thousands of years..." So yes, they're on an island.
Besides, how many land masses in the South Pacific are there other than
islands???
Even Australia, although a continent, is still an island.

yes, Locke said "I have looked into the eye of the island, and it
was beautiful."
