Not a soul
But felt a fever of the mad and play'd
Some tricks of desperation. All but mariners
Plunged in the foaming brine and quit the vessel,
Then all afire with me: the king's son, Ferdinand,
With hair up-staring,--then like reeds, not hair,--
Was the first man that leap'd; cried, 'Hell is empty
And all the devils are here.'

The Island Vs. The Others

I reviewed a lot of the theories out there and could not find a thread exactly based on this.

As Locke stated - the Island selected them - the question is why. Perhaps the entity that is the island is looking for good souls who can unite together and defeat "the others"
The others may have been terrorizing this area for centuries - taking advantage of the supernatural essence that brings people to the island. The island wants them gone (perhaps at some point they served a purpose) and found 40+ souls all looking to redeem themselves and their lives. Walt was the bait to begin the process to get the group unified for a cause. Perhaps Claire's baby is destined to be the ultimate key to victory.

The island is giving the survivors what they want (need) to make them strong to get them to believe with Locke as the conduit for the "faith approach" If they all believe in the island and its "powers" they will do the island's bidding and vanquish the others.

I still have not figured out how the #s exactly fit into to this theory or why Walt did not want the hatch open. Perhaps the opening of the hatch as being the catalyst of the battle between the suvivors and the others with many of the survivors getting killed as a result. Though Walt may not have seen this level of detail, he might have sensed that deatch will come as a result.

. . . and so it did. If Artz hadn't been with them, they all might have blown up.

RE: The Island Vs. The Others

I YES! I was TRYING to make this thought sound right in my head last night, and you NAILED IT. I think the Others DO use the Island somehow, and something or someone doesn't like it; that's why the Numbers were sent out...maybe.

maybe the Others represent Pestilence: the last time the Hatch was opened, it let something bad out, ala Pandora's Box. When it's opened again, it's Hope, and somehow Claire's baby (maybe) will be key to releasing hope somehow, destroying whatever bad stuff got out before, returning SOMETHING to "normal".

ugh, it's all too flighty in my head right now...swimming...

RE: The Island Vs. The Others

Yes Seattle - I like your ideas on the hatch - maybe it was involved somehow in the creation of the "Others" and now it is trying to fix it.
Here is another thought - all of the characters have father issues in various ways. That is the common theme as to what their connection is. If Michael dies trying to save his son, the others could bond to take up his cause as Michael will represent the dedicated father they all desired.
I do not think it is a coincidence that a single father lost his child and the other characters all had issues with their father. The island selected its group very carefully.

Let me add to my theory.
If their are tail section survivors on the other side of the island, perhaps the island divided them up to test them to see who was more likely to accomplish its goal.

RE: The Island Vs. The Others

I was thinking perhaps that The Others found the island on their own and were'nt selected by the island itself. Therefore, they're aliens on it (as in foreign) so the security system will seek them out readily. Also I believe the others must understand that the island brings people who are 'special', and if they can only captuer them they have either bait, or a living key to the powers of the isle.

I was thinking about Ethan's taking Claire. Remember the first time he came for her she said somebody was punching into her stomach with a needle? Perhaps they were trying to test to see if Claire's kid was the 'special one'. Perhaps they failed to get what they needed that night so they decided they had to kidnap her. By whatever method they use, they find that lil' Turniphead wasn't the one the island wants so by elimination they know it's Walt.

RE: he Island Vs. The Others

I If Ethan did kidnap Claire for Danielle, than he only did it to try to help get Alex back.
If Etan is one of the "others" than you may be right as to what occurred. However, maybe Ethan dis-associated himself with the others for some reason.
