Not a soul
But felt a fever of the mad and play'd
Some tricks of desperation. All but mariners
Plunged in the foaming brine and quit the vessel,
Then all afire with me: the king's son, Ferdinand,
With hair up-staring,--then like reeds, not hair,--
Was the first man that leap'd; cried, 'Hell is empty
And all the devils are here.'
The Tempest. Act i. Sc. 2
Note, my predictions aren't based on spoilers. They're just
my guesses.
I know a lot of people that feel this way, but I'm really starting to
believe that Lost will end like The Aliens On Maple Street (I think that's
the name) episode of The Twilight Zone. In that all sorts of power failures
and problems occur, and people find cameras planted in their homes. The
neighborhood gets together to try and find the problem, except for one
family, that was out at the time, and is just returning. They don't come
outside to help the neighborhood. In the end, the whole neighborhood burns
down the house of the people that wouldn't come out. But it turns out
there were no aliens, or terrorists (in the new remake Twilight Zone.)
It was just a military-oriented plan to see how a neighborhood would react,
if there WAS a terrorist attack.
Now, on to yesterday's episode, I really liked it. You found out more
about the father/son relationship and I actually think those medical segments
were better than any shows that specialized in that area (E.R. etc.) What
I think is going to happen is that the group will retrieve Claire, but
Ethan will have already killed her baby by then.
Again, I see this ending with all the characters systematically dying
in this government-run plan. Claire will commit suicide because of her
baby's death, several people will die off due to starvation, and "the
others" will "kidnap" a few more of the characters. Locke
will be behind the entire thing, as he's given several hints that it looks
like he's trying to "guide" the castaways, as if they were on
some sort of "mission." P.S. I hate when the show runs past
9:00. My Wednesday TV lineup is Lost, then King Of Queens. I always have
to miss the final minute of Lost to switch to CBS.

I guess that would be the glass half empty version of where
the show could go.
But logic dictates that people won't be dying off in droves, as those
characters are one major reason why people are tuning in to watch the
show.

Very interesting. Here is my first post anywhere about Lost (from IMDB):
Quote:
...Nonetheless, now I have seen the second episode (missed the first,
and hope to catch it Saturday), so I'll plunk down one of my more conservative
theories that seems to jibe with all the data I've gathered thus far:
At some point in time an island was discovered on which nothing died of
natural causes. The government (American? French? NATO? UN? etc.) realized
what importance this real-life fountain of youth had and sequestered the
area, probably as an area for international top-secret research and preservation
of all species, making the island a sort of Noah's Ark (the island's secret
will be revealed after 40 series-days). One of the species that of course
must be preserved is Homo Sapiens, and just how to do this has befuddled
the scientists and world governments since the project began. Or perhaps
it is just an island with ideal conditions for these purposes that has
been somehow purposely secreted from the rest of the world.
They can't just start with an Adam and an Eve; they need some diversity
in genetics and skills and enough numbers to be able to survive and build
a society. Predicting or perhaps having had past bad experience with an
all-volunteer group (perhaps one of which the French "mayaday"
sender was a member of?) A group of people are hand picked and routed
onto one flight, which is somehow caused to crash while these people are
all seated in the section which is reinforced and designed to break away
and parachute (yes, there are parachute systems that can bring down the
largest transport planes in the world intact) safely to the island, or
something similar that would ensure their survival. [Remember the turbine
that still ran - it must have been a soft landing indeed] Perhaps the
pilot (or yeoman, I didn't see the first hour) was supposed to die, or
he was to be part of the group, but he definitely wasn't supposed to tell
the others they had a 0% chance of being rescued (indicating he knew where
they were to some extent), and that may be why he met an untimely demise
at hands of a terrifying creature, machine, or entity before he could
reveal more.
Of course, there are probably creatures on the island from WAY back who
lived until modern times - just no dinosaurs. Even if and assortment of
dinosaurs from 100,000,000 years ago survived on the island (How big is
this island, anyway? Could it be a lost continent, like Lemuria (Mu)?
The location is dead-on) they would have evolved into different types
of animals completely, or more likely died off over time from being squeezed
out by more adaptable and fit species. The danger of these animals to
the survivors, however, is nothing compared to the danger posed to them
by the most dangerous species to ever inhabit Earth - their fellow human
beings. The inevitable competition and infighting amongst the subjects
is what has made the experiment fail all the times it was tried in the
past.
I expect Locke may be the control character, the person on the island
to guide the survivors in the right direction without revealing they are
part of an experiment in forming a new society. Of course, the powers
that be may go the easy route and "reveal" to them that the
rest of the Earth has been destroyed, and they were the people chosen
by lottery or for whatever reasons to repopulate the planet. The true
shocker comes when they find out the rest of the Earth has been tooling
merrily along without them, and that they were just part of an experiment
(a la The Chosen Survivors, a cheap early 70s horror film with bats).
Thus far I have seen nothing to refute my original theory (well, my
second one after thinking about purgatory and then deciding against it),
though it will probably require some revisions. Indeed, I have seen a
lot of evidence to lend credence to the theory.
I hope it's not right, though, because if it's close to the truth the
creators will eventually get wind of it and further alter the plot so
as to make sure every single person is surprised when the island mysteries
are eventually revealed

Even tho' they have scripts written in advance of the filming they still have several writers on the set to make changes on the fly. I bet they read these boards and are playing "checkmate" with us as to what is happening or will happen next. Sort of writing it as they go along? They were going to kill off a character a show and now that is not happening. I hope the main characters are happy living in Hawaii and want to stay with the show for several years. If you read of a new TV show to start in the fall that stars one of "our" characters you know his/her end is near.....
