My theory immediately after seing the show was...Its a combination.
The number are some kind of a lock combination. I know it seems stupid to put the combination of a lock on the device your locking but what if it was a containier designed to keep something in not to keep people out.
What if their are people living inside the container and they know the combination but can't unlock it from the inside.
Wouldn't they broadcast the combination over a radio if they had it.
What if they knew they were going to die so they wanted their secret revealed to the world so they started the transmission.
Just things in my head...

I think the big metal thing is another plane.
My theory is that another plane crash landed on the island - even before the french chick (obviously - that's why she's there). The crew of that flight probably did the very same thing our crew is trying to do - figure out where the hell they are, and get a signal out - so that crew crash-landed, and they scrambled up the tallest hill (the black rock - maybe it's black because it has a lot of iron - it's VERY magnetic...??), and broadcast their flight numbers as far as they can to get someone to rescue them. The number is not a combination - it's the plane number/flight number.

I'd lean closer to an old WW II bunker then I would a plane. I do however think that it is some kind of combination.

How about this one. Take the numbers and add them all up. This equals 108. Divide the 108 by how many numbers there are and you get 18. 6 goes into 18 three times. You get 666 the sign of the beast....

To me it looks like a series of numbers that combined in different sequences cause different results. 8 15 sure looks like it results in a plane crash. Using all the numbers is good for fortune and doom. Just a thought. hg

No I think the sequence of the numbers is very important. Lets not make this more difficult by scrambling them the simplest solution is the best.

I am a lurker coming out to post this idea, just something different to consider. And if someone else has posted this and I missed it, sorry.
Anyway, in regards to the numbers on last night's episode there is one weird correlation. The first number was 4. The episode was called "Numbers". The 4th book of the Bible is also called "Numbers". So if you were to read the number series as directives to find certain passages in the Bible, then it links up that you would start at Numbers. I dug out a Bible and looked up what passages the number sequence would indicate and they meant nothing to me but maybe someone else with more knowledge of things biblical wants to take a shot at this idea?
